About the event
The ancient peoples who first marked the winter solstice did not gather in celebration. They gathered in vigil. They built their fires high and pressed close together and waited — waited for the light to return, because the longest night of the year was understood, across every culture that has ever tried to make sense of this season, as the night when the boundary between the living and the dead dissolves.
